Newly Renovated Hapuna Golf Course

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort Unveils a Million-Dollar Renovation to Hapuna Golf Course

The investment elevates playability, course conditions and sustainability while preserving the original Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay design

Kohala Coast, Hawai’i – The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, part of Mauna Kea Resort - home to the iconic Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, an Autograph Collection property, and Mauna Kea Residences - is excited to unveil a million-dollar enhancement to the Hapuna Golf Course, further elevating one of Hawai‘i Island’s most scenic and distinctive golf courses. Perched above the Kohala Coast, the 18-hole course is known for its dramatic elevation changes and sweeping ocean and mountain views, offering an ideal experience for players of all skills.

Originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, Hapuna Golf Course has long been celebrated for its thoughtful routing and natural integration into the island’s unique environment. The latest enhancements build upon this legacy, refining key elements of the course to deliver more consistent playing conditions while preserving the integrity of its original design.

“Hapuna Golf Course has always stood out for its striking setting and approachable yet rewarding design,” said Marguerite Heap, hotel manager. “With these enhancements, we’ve elevated the playing experience while staying true to Palmer and Seay’s original vision, ensuring the course continues to be a standout within Mauna Kea Resort’s celebrated golf offerings.”

Highlight enhancements to the Hapuna Golf Course include:

  • Upgraded Turf for Consistent Playing Conditions: All playing areas have been enhanced with seashore paspalum, a premium drought-resistant turf well-suited for coastal environments.
  • Refined Fairways and Bunkers: Select fairways have been reshaped to improve flow and playability, while bunkers have been upgraded to enhance both aesthetics and performance, creating a more seamless and enjoyable round.
  • Commitment to Sustainability: The introduction of seashore paspalum supports more efficient water usage and long-term course health, aligning with broader environmental stewardship efforts. This premium, drought-resistant turf can also be maintained with untreated water while supporting improved playing consistency and overall course sustainability.

The par-72 Hapuna Golf Course stretches up to 6,895 yards from the championship tees, with a course rating of 73.3 and slope rating of 136, offering a rewarding challenge across varied elevations and panoramic coastal vistas. Multiple tee options allow for a flexible playing experience suited to both seasoned golfers and leisure players alike.

Guests also enjoy a full-service golf experience, including a driving range, practice putting greens, premium golf club sets available for purchase or rental, and private or group instruction from on-staff PGA professionals. GPS-equipped golf carts provide real-time yardage and course insights, enhancing playability throughout the round. The clubhouse experience is anchored by a fully stocked pro shop alongside Islander Sake Brewery, one of the only on-property sake breweries in Hawai‘i, offering a unique post-round setting where guests can unwind with locally crafted sake.

Together with the iconic Mauna Kea Golf Course, Hapuna Golf Course remains an integral part of Mauna Kea Resort’s world-class golf offerings, delivering a competitive course experience rooted in natural beauty, thoughtful design, and a deep connection to the island.
